Sea Moss Supplements: Weighing Benefits vs. Risks

By: Eddye Bullock, MD, internal medicine doctor at Kaiser Permanente
If you spend time on social media, you have probably seen influencers and celebrities promoting sea moss as the latest wellness trend. Social media influencers claim that sea moss offers a host of benefits including boosting immunity, supporting weight loss, improving gut health, and increasing energy.
Before you add any supplement to your routine, it helps to separate marketing claims from scientific evidence. While sea moss offers several nutrients that support overall health, more research is needed to understand the long-term health benefits of sea moss.
What is sea moss?
Sea moss is a type of red algae that grows in the Atlantic Ocean. For generations, people have used it in cooking as a thickening ingredient and as a home remedy for common illnesses.
Today, manufacturers market sea moss as a dietary supplement and sell it in many forms, including gels, capsules, powders, and gummies. Sea moss naturally contains fiber, iodine, calcium, zinc, folate, and small amounts of other vitamins and minerals.
These nutrients play important roles in the body, which explains why sea moss has gained popularity as a way to boost overall health.
Potential health benefits
Many people cite sea moss’s fiber content as the primary reason they take this supplement. Fiber supports digestive health and can help you feel full longer after eating. For those who want help managing their weight, that can sound appealing.
Some people also use sea moss because they believe it can:
- Support a healthy digestive system
- Promote heart health
- Help regulate blood sugar levels
- Strengthen the immune system
- Assist with weight management
While these claims circulate widely online, researchers have not confirmed most of them in large, high-quality human studies. Many claims stem from what sea moss contains rather than actual health benefits observed in scientific research.
In other words, sea moss contains healthy nutrients, but researchers cannot yet say with confidence that taking a sea moss supplement will lead to specific health outcomes.
What are the risks?
Many people assume that a supplement is safe because it comes from a natural source. Unfortunately, that is not always true.
One concern is product quality. Unlike prescription medications, dietary supplements do not undergo the same level of review before they reach store shelves. As a result, products may vary significantly in their ingredients and nutrient levels.
Another concern is contamination. Sea moss absorbs substances from the water where it grows. If manufacturers harvest it from polluted areas, it may contain heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, or mercury. Over time, these contaminants can harm the kidneys, nervous system, and other organs.
Who should be cautious?
Sea moss contains high levels of iodine, which supports normal thyroid function. However, too much iodine can create problems. People who have thyroid conditions should speak with their physician before taking sea moss because too much iodine can worsen thyroid disorders and interfere with hormone regulation.
You should also use caution if you:
- Take blood-thinning medications
- Have a chronic medical condition
- Take multiple prescription medications
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Even if you consider yourself healthy, discuss any new supplement with your doctor before starting it.
Better-supported ways to support your health
If your goal is better gut health, stronger immunity, or weight management, several strategies offer stronger scientific support than sea moss supplements.
For digestive health:
- Eat more fruits and vegetables.
- Choose whole grains whenever possible.
- Add beans, lentils, and other legumes to meals.
- Include fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, or sauerkraut.
For immune health:
- Get adequate sleep.
- Stay physically active.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Eat a balanced diet rich in whole foods.
- Wash your hands regularly.
These habits consistently deliver benefits and do not carry the same uncertainties associated with many supplements.
If you decide to try sea moss
If you and your physician decide that sea moss is appropriate for you, choose products carefully. Look for brands that provide information about where they source and test their sea moss. Follow the recommended serving size, and do not assume that taking more will produce better results.
Most importantly, monitor how you feel and report any unusual symptoms to your healthcare provider.
Focus on healthy habits
Sea moss contains nutrients that contribute to overall health, but current research does not support many of the bold claims shared on social media. While some people may choose to use it, potential risks—including excess iodine intake and possible contamination—deserve careful consideration.
Instead of trying the latest trendy supplement, focus on developing healthy habits that consistently improve wellbeing, including regular exercise, nutritious foods, quality sleep, stress management, and preventive care. When it comes to long-term wellness, those proven strategies still outperform any trending supplement.
