A Conversation with Gabor Vida, Managing Director & General Manager, The St. James Northern Virginia Campus

You’ve led teams at Rosewood, Ritz-Carlton, and Four Seasons around the world. What’s the one lesson from luxury hospitality you brought straight to The St. James?
The biggest lesson I brought from luxury hospitality is that every interaction matters, and people remember how you make them feel. Working in this field has taught me that excellence is not just about the environment or the amenities—it’s about the people, the details, and the consistency of the experience.
When you’re not at the complex, where would we find you on a Saturday?
When I’m not at The St. James, you’ll most likely find me on the sidelines or in the stands supporting my children and watching them develop through their sports. Or, simply spending time with my wife and kids—whether we're sharing a meal, enjoying time together as a family, exploring something new, or just appreciating the little moments. Life moves quickly, and I value the opportunity to be present and create memories together.
What’s a family tradition (or ritual with the people closest to you) that keeps you grounded?
One of the things that keeps me grounded is spending time in nature and appreciating the incredible things our planet provides. Whether it’s being outdoors, exploring new places, or simply taking a moment to slow down and appreciate the world around us.
What’s your sport? The one you play, the one you watch, and the one you secretly wish you were great at.
A, the sport that has shaped me the most is sprint kayaking. It has been a defining part of my life, and I am fortunate to still compete today. I represented Hungary at the national, international, and World Championship levels, including competing in Olympic Trials, and I have continued to compete and medal at the ICF World Masters Championship level. I am still training today as I prepare for the 2027 World Masters Games. B, The sport I also play and love being around is soccer. I play in an adult league every week, and I coach youth soccer, which gives me the opportunity to share my passion for the game and help young athletes develop both on and off the field. C, The sport I love to watch is also soccer. The recent World Cup was another incredible reminder of the power of sports and how it connects the world. For a few weeks, countries, cultures, and generations came together around a shared passion, creating moments that transcend the game itself. That’s what makes football (soccer) so special—it truly is a global language. As the saying goes, ‘Football is life.’ It represents passion, community, resilience, and the ability of sport to bring people together no matter where they come from.
Finish this sentence: “The first time someone walks into The St. James, I want them to feel...”
Inspired by what’s possible. I want them to immediately realize this isn’t just a gym or a sports facility—it’s a place where sports, recovery, wellness, education, dining, and entertainment all come together. I want every guest to feel that they’ve found a community where they belong and are empowered to become the best version of themselves.
Where do you see The St. James in five years — what gets you most excited about what’s ahead?
I see The St. James continuing to set the standard for integrated sports, wellness, education and entertainment while expanding our footprint into new markets. What excites me most is the opportunity to bring our unique model to more communities, helping more people experience everything The St. James has to offer.
